Course Information

This course would suit you if you:

  • Are interested in developing practical animal care skills and supporting theoretical understanding

  • Enjoy working outdoors, with large and small animals

  • Are considering a career which involves working with animals


This course consists of developing a wide range of animal care skills and knowledge, one day per week, through:

  • Taking part in taught sessions and group discussions

  • Gaining experience at equestrian centres, farms, kennels and animal trainers

  • Participating in group practicals

  • Working within commercial businesses and charities

You also gain experience in the following areas:

  • Maintaining animals - horses, farms animals and small animals

  • Animal Health - treatments and preventions

  • Animal nutrition

  • Handling, restraining and transporting animals

  • Exercising, training and grooming animals

  • Maintenence and construction of animal accommodation and boundaries

  • Completing a range of units in order to gain the Level 1 or 2 Award, Certificate or Diploma in Animal Care

Further Course Information:

This course could lead to:

  • An Apprenticeship in Animal Care (Level 2)

  • An Advanced Apprenticeship in Animal Care (Level 3)

  • Enhanced employment opportunities

  • Greater access opportunities to Further Education

Assessment

  • On-going practical assessments carried out in the workplace

  • Development of a portfolio of evidence to prove your level of competence and understanding

  • No formal examinations
