What will I study?

This qualification combines knowledge and practical work with employment experience. The course reflects the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in amenity and landscape gardening.

What units will be covered?

Mandatory Units

  • Monitor and maintain health and safety.
  • Maintain and develop personal performance.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Level and prepare sites for landscaping.
  • Use and maintain non-powered and hand-held powered tools and equipment.
  • Clear horticulture and landscaping sites.

Optional Units - Examples (these are chosen by your assessor and employer)

  • Install drainage systems.
  • Use and maintain pedestrian controlled powered equipment.
  • Construct water features.
  • Install hard standing sub-layers.
What qualification (will I get)?

Intermediate Apprenticeships which includes - Level 2 Work-based Diploma in Horticulture (Landscaping). Functional Maths and English Level 1.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are of a practical nature and are carried out throughout the course. The underpinning knowledge is also assessed. This can be done by a range of methods including written and verbal assessment. Most of the evidence of competence will be gathered in the workplace.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum age of 16 years.

Potential apprentices are expected to demonstrate that they are:

  • Prepared to attend off-the-job training.
  • Able to acquire the broad range of skills, knowledge and understanding required in the Apprenticeship.
  • Able to achieve the Level 2 Diploma in Work-Based Horticulture.

Horticulture' covers a wide range of activities and involves the undertaking of practical tasks. There is an expectation that learners will have a reasonable level of fitness. If a learner is in any doubt about the course details, they should discuss their concerns with the course tutor before they enrol.

What can I do after this training course?

Students may find that this qualification helps them to progress in their present employment. They can also progress to the level 3 work based diploma (Advanced Apprenticeship) provided that they meet the entry criteria and have successfully completed their level 2 work based programme.
