Work Based Diploma - Veterinary Nursing

RCVS Qualification with apprenticeships

Learners for Veterinary Nursing must be employed at a practice registered with the RCVS (Royal
College of Veterinary Surgeons) to take trainees.

A structured programme of day release classes is provided over the two year programme, covering the theory required for the Work Based Diploma.

There is a large amount of science in the course and learners must have 5 GCSE passes at C or above, including Mathematics, English Language and Science, before starting. A portfolio of case logs is prepared each year and a practical examination occurs at the end of the Work Based Diploma.

  • Monitor and care for in-patients
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety
  • Develop personal performance
  • Perform laboratory diagnostic tests
  • Administer veterinary medical nursing to animals
  • Prepare for diagnostic imaging techniques and conduct radiography on animals
  • Prepare for veterinary surgical procedures
  • Assist the veterinary surgeon during surgical procedures
  • Assist the provision of anaesthetics to animals
  • Dispense and administer vetinary medication
