What are Key Skills?
Key Skills are life skills and are important in everyday life; they enable
learners to develop their life skills in an ever-changing working environment
where they become a valid asset to your workplace.
They are embedded with other aspects of the learning programme ensuring motivation
and achievement.
There are six different types of Key Skills available at levels 1-4.
The core ones are:
- Communication
- Application of Number
- Information Communication Technology.
To gain these Key Skills learners are required to build a portfolio of evidence, and depending on GCSE results, a multiple choice test
The wider ones are:
- Improving own learning performance
- Working With Others
- Problem Solving
To gain these Key Skills learners need to complete a portfolio of evidence.
The key skills which need to be achieved by the learner depend on the apprenticeship being undertaken, this can be discussed with a member of DART staff.
Basic Skills
Basic skills are designed to improve learners’ ability to read, write and use mathematics at a level necessary to function at work and at home/leisure. Basic skills in Literacy and Numeracy are delivered through additional learning sessions, either with a member of DART staff or from an external support tutor, for example the Nottingham Training Network.
All DART learners will receive some Basic Skills support during their programme, and this is an essential component to their programme. Support from employers is encouraged and learners may need extra time with their tutor to complete necessary work.
